Canada’s Oldest Winter Carnival Is Turning Downtown Rossland Into An Extreme Sports Snow Bash!

Extreme winter sports are nothing new to the alpine city of Rossland.  After all, a Norwegian Miner, Olaus Jeldness, first introduced the crazy idea of downhill skiing to Canada way back in 1897 on the slopes of Red Mountain which overlook the city.  Continuing in that tradition on January 26th thru the 28th, the 110th annual Rossland Winter Carnival will feature an amazing lineup of unique events that could only be done in the Kootenays.

Home made bobsleds will again fly down 10 blocks of Spokane Street finishing Rossland Winter Carnival Logodowntown.  Skiers & Boarders will jam up Queen Street in the rail park beside the post office.   Across from there will be the snow volleyball court and Bavarian gardens right beside Ross Vegas board shop.  The John Heintz Cup Relay race sees teams of skiers, runners & bikers starting at the top of Red Mountain and finishing downtown on Columbia Avenue.  Plus, high stakes will be played for at the snowmobile poker run.

And, for the first time ever, the legendary Flow Riders Extreme Mountain Biking Team from the North Shore of Vancouver will do their fantastic Bike tricks in the snow!  Dangerous Dan and the boys will be setting up their ladder bridges, teeter totters, skinnies and kickers right in the middle of a city’s downtown covered in a full load of the soft, white stuff.  We’re calling it a Snow-Flo!

For those less adventurous, the Rotary Wine Tasting, the Variety talent show, and all sorts of family events will round out the weekend.  A full schedule of events will be released by mid-January, 2007.  For more information on how you can volunteer or participate, call the Rossland Chamber at 362-5666.
