Over the course of 6 years and 6 albums, the work of acclaimed Canadian musical artist Harry Manx has helped coin two new terms for the music lover’s vernacular: “mysticssippi” and “the Harry Zone”. “Mysticssippi” or “Ganges Delta Blues” refer to Manx’s unique and sensual melding of western and eastern music; the earthiness and storytelling tradition of the blues blended with the transcendent grooves and melodies of the Indian raga. The “Harry Zone” refers the mesmerizing atmosphere of his live shows, where the audience is drawn deeply into the music. A lucky audience in Rossland will enter the Harry Zone on Sunday May 13th when Manx appears along with famed Canadian guitarist Kevin Breit at the Miners Hall at 8:00 pm.
Born on the Isle of Man and moving to Canada as a child, Manx traveled and sang the blues as a busker and festival player in Europe, Japan, India and Brazil starting in his teens. Spurred by a growing interest in Eastern music, he moved to India in the 80’s where he spent 5 years learning from legendary Rajasthani musician Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, a Grammy award winner for his collaboration with Ry Cooder and inventor of the unique sitar, the Mohan Veena.
A guitar/sitar hybrid with twenty strings which is played lap style with a slide, the Mohan Veena has become Manx’s signature instrument, exemplifying the trans-global flavour of his music. His sound mixes generous portions of east and west, playing steel guitar, banjo and harmonica alongside tamboura and drums.
Appearing with Harry in Rossland is guitarist Kevin Breit, a much sought after performance and session artist who has played with an eclectic and impressive roster of musical luminaries including k.d. lang, Holly Cole, Rosanne Cash, Cassandra Wilson, Janis Ian, Natalie McMaster, Barra MacNeills, and Molly Johnson.
This northern Ontario native was also part of Norah Jones’ “Handsome Band”, playing on her breakout album Feels Like Home (also penning one of its songs, “Humble Me” and touring with the multiple Grammy award winner. A master of all things stringed, Breit will bring plenty of instruments with him to the Miners Hall stage.
Tickets are $27 in advance and $30 at the door and are available at the Rossland Chamber of Commerce, Out of the Cellar in Rossland and at the Charles Bailey Box Office in Trail. Residents who live outside the Rossland/Trail area can reserve tickets with a credit card Monday through Friday by calling the Charles Bailey Theatre Box Office at 368-9669.
