Everyone is encouraged to come to Rossland’s first Earth Day celebration on Sunday, April 22 at the Miner’s Hall. There will be fun for the whole family, along with plenty of information on how homes or businesses can be more energy efficient.
The activities will start at 10 a.m. on Sunday. There will be various Earth Day information booths such as energy demonstrations, easy ways to green your home and Fortis BC’s Power Sense booth, that will have information on helpful power-saving tips and power rebates. There will also be entertainment for kids, including games, competitions, face-painting and door prizes.
Composting is a great way to reduce your trash. To share more about ‘bear friendly’ composting, there will be a Bear Aware compost workshop at 1 p.m. hosted by Marty Cancilla, Rossland’s Bear Aware expert.
At 4 p.m. the film ‘The Power of Community’ will be shown. It focuses on how Cuban communities pulled together to survive its trade and oil embargos. That’s intriguing movie that focuses on things such as urban planning and alternative farming techniques such as rooftop and urban gardening.
Following the film, Tracey Saxby will give a seminar on ways to reduce your disposable plastic bag use. This will be closely related to Rossland’s effort to eliminate the use of disposable plastic shopping bags. If you are interested in this initiative or would like to bring awareness to your own community, this is a great chance to find out more.
This event has been organized by Greener Footprints, a community based organization along with local Rosslanders who wish to create greater environmental awareness on a global and local level. Come and take part, have fun and gain some ideas on how you can save money and contribute to the sustainability of our planet.
